Description

Turrican from the Turrican series.

Part 22/24 of my Amiga tribute project >3

"Hello and welcome to Turrican, be my guest,
another day, another cry, but remember...
Shoot! Or! Die!"

Whew, had this one scanned and waiting for the finishing touches before the whole mess at my house, and just found it today so thought it's high time to post it |3
So anyway, this is just THE best action shooter/platformer that Amiga could offer called the Turrican series.
And I'm neither kidding nor exaggerating, the Turrican series were advertised as the most action packed games for the system, and boy have they delivered what advertised 8D
It was initially released for the C64 and Amiga, but ports to pretty much every single system soon followed, and for good reasons too. But then again, a game taking some of the best gimmicks from other succesful games just couldn't be botched that easily. It has Metroid-like open stages and the ability to turn into a rolling sphere to attack (although here you could also leave mines to kill enemies while in sphere form), it has the wire grapple from Bionic Commando, it has the gameplay and power-ups of Contra, hell, you could even stomp on turtle-like enemies to make them ram into other enemies like in a certain game I think you're all familiar with XD
So yeah, Turrican had it's share of copied material, but then again, some say that Halo had it's share of inspiration off Turrican (Spartans being bio-engineered superhumans just like Turricans, not to mention the sci-fi suit of armor), also, that was basically the way games were made most of the time, taking an idea that worked, and trying to either improve on it or at least make your own variation of it.
Hell, even Nintendo themselves did that a number of times, especially with of their most popular franchises, Mario Kart (which was modelled after Pole Position and Crashing Race) and Super Smash Bros. (which was modelled after the Poy Poy games)... buuut, I'm getting off track here |D

So yeah, despite being a little too familiar at times, the fact the Turrican series were some of the most action-packed games of it's time is undeniable. The animation was smooth, the controls were slick and very responsive, the music was awesome and memorable (it was composed by Chris Hülsbeck, so it couldn't be any less), the story... well, lets just say it was yet another sci-fi scenario that was just put there to make a solid excuse for shooting the hell outta everything in sight XD
Ain all, it was truly one of the greatest Amiga titles, and if you'll manage to get one of the multi-platform ports, be sure to give it a try. Also, the link I provided is a playthrough from the third game, which was hands down the best part ^^

Other parts of the project - Shadow Of The Beast, Shadow Fighter, Zool, The Chaos Engine, Superfrog, Skeleton Krew, The Speris Legacy, Flashback, Agony, Brutal: Paws of Fury, Fightin' Spirit, Ruff 'N' Tumble, SwitchBlade, Lionheart, The Lost Vikings, Brian The Lion, Wolfchild, Gods, Entity, Franko: The Crazy Revenge, Hired Guns, Turrican, The Killing Game Show, Yo! You've made an underappreciated character look really awesome. Love the pose and the gun he's holding. I never had an Amiga, but I did play Super/ Mega Turrican on the SNES and Megadrive.
