Great Hero or Cruel Enemy?

Devilman, the main character from the Devilman series.

In case you don't know this guy, he's one of the most awesome anime characters ever, and pretty much the originator of the gore anime genre. Hehehe, I'm not kidding, if you'll look closely, most (if not all) gore/slasher anime nowdays have many things taken directly from Devilman >3 especially Hellsing (though Hirano did say he based many things in his anime on Trigun or Devilman).

Go Nagai, the series creator, has a tendency to show the battles in his series in a more "realistic" way, even with all the demons flying around. So in here, there are no indestructible ninjas nor just as indestructible random guys with swords (you know to which series I'm referring don't you >3), because Nagai wanted to show just how a true battle between such demonic monstrosities would really look, so if one demon slashes another with it's huge claws, he'll probably disembowel the other one, and the main character is no exception, there are pretty much no battles where he doesn't end up with serious wounds (he even lost an arm once), but even at the edge of death, he can still heal due to his demonic powers (if a demon fox can give you healing factor, then I don't see why a purely demonic power couldn't). And the funniest thing is, that even with all the demons and stuff, this series DOES make perfect sense, but I guess you'll have to watch it to see for yourself >3

So if you like this sort of series, then do give it a try, hehe, though the original series are from 1972, but later there were also 3 OAVs (made in the late 80's and mid-90's), which look way better, and bloodier >3
So I advise you should at least watch the OAVs, to fully appreciate his awesomeness.
But on the other hand, avoid the live-action movie at all costs... it looks awesome design wise... but it pretty much screwed up the whole storyline (but that's what happens when you try and show all 39 episodes of an anime in just a 1,5 hour movie...).
